Best Diets that Will Keep the Weight Off Long Term
There are a couple of categories of diets currently being sold in the form of books, online diets and
general diet lifestyles that have been passed down for literally generations. The categories of diets
reviewed on this page fall into one or two of the following :
- Vegetarian or vegan
- Protein Dominant or "Low Carb"
- Carb Smart - Monitoring "Bad carbs" and maintaining "Good carbs"
- Stringent diets such as the macrobiotic diet which is very restrictive
- Organic style diets
- Fad diets
Note that we are required to tell you we may receive compensation if your referral results in sales,
however, these are my true experiences with these diets.
The first category of diets in the review list above is still a very healthy choice for many people. People
who know how to balance their vegetarian diet menu that is. Many vegetarians do not get adequate
good fat nor do they get enough protein. There are some vegetarians I know that base their diets on a
lot of breads and other meatless foods such as pasta, which tend to carry very little nutritional value,
and they neglect the very food that their entire diet is based on - veggies and fruits.
The vegan diet is a little trickier. Vegans are restricted not only from eating animal meats, but they
also do not eat cheeses, eggs or anything with any animal fat in it. They can't even eat chocolate chip
cookies, because they have eggs in them.
This also rules out butter, and even some soy products such as soy burgers, which many times
contain some form of dairy food in them for flavor. This is indeed a very restrictive, tough diet, and it is
very hard to stay nutritionally balanced, healthy and energetic on this diet.
A second, more popular and widely followed type of diet is the low carb diet - the second on the diet
review list. This diet has gotten way out of hand and is largely misunderstood. A rash of low carb
foods began to be marketed to low carbers in early 2000, and too many people binged on these
foods, then wondered why they didn't lose weight.
Not only that, they had a huge belly ache! Low carb diets are excellent ways to eat, as long as you
don't try to substitute the foods you should be eating with your protein - like veggies, with other
"special low carb" foods like pastas and baking mixes.
The Zone diet is very similar to another carb smart diet called
the South Beach Diet . These two diets are very similar in that
they rely on a precise combination of good carbs, good fats
and veggies and fruits. It is actually a fairly easy diet regimen
to stick to, because portions are large and seem like a lot of
calories, but yet they aren't . It's not the fast way to lose weight,
certainly, but it is an excellent choice for a lifetime diet style.
It's interesting to note that people who follow low calorie, precisely balanced diets such as these two
tend to have less incidence of depression, disease and sickness. It's also scientifically proven that
people who have low calorie diets live longer.
This may be a hard concept for many Americans to swallow, but that is precisely the reason we are
faced with a nation of obesity. The mentality of super sizing and portions is out of control, and we are
seeing out waistlines expand more and more because of it. I mean, look at the popularity of the
gastric bypass procedure? Perfect case in point.
Sometimes the most difficult period of adjustment in dieting and losing weight is trying to reduce your
calorie intake fairly quickly. This is where a good appetite supressing herb such as herbal
phentermine can really help. As long as you can get over that initial "hump", you can usually do the
rest fairly painlessly, since your body would have been adjusted to the lower calorie regimen for a few
weeks, and your stomach size will actually shrink somewhat during this time, making it more difficult
to eat large amounts of food comfortably.
What to Do When You've Over Indulged
If you really feel the need to over do it, you may want to try a good carb blocking supplement or
fat burner that helps to burn off excessive caloric intake during these times. This trick may be
especially helpful around the holidays when there seem to be carbs and fats lurking around every
corner and the temptation to indulge is overwhelming. Another good trick to making the most out of
your meals, and assuring your brain registers fullness with less food is to eat slowly, and chew your
food 35-50 times before swallowing. This is a surefire way, even on its own, to reduce calorie intake
and induces feelings of fullness faster.
Body For Life is also another highly reviewed and acclaimed diet regimen,
which makes for a high quality and successful lifetime diet. I actually have
friends that have seen great LONG TERM success with this system.
They have made comments that they are never hungry and do not feel deprived.
The other cool thing about this diet is that it gives you a "day off" every week, which definitely makes
cutting back during the week all the more easy. It also gives you something to look forward to, a
reward if you will.
The bottom line with any diet that you choose is that moderation is the key to long term success on
any diet, whether you follow a prescribed regimen or you just eat consciously, and that is what the
three diets discussed promote, in one way or another. Moderation, common sense and smart food
and dietary supplement selection will make a long life full of health, energy and weight management
easy.
